Accusing California of imposing “unnecessary red tape” on the production of eggs, the Trump administration is suing the state over animal cruelty laws it claims have driven up prices nationwide.

The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against California, arguing the state's animal welfare law preempts federal law and are therefore illegal and have driven up egg prices.

A federal complaint filed Wednesday says the state's rules for humane treatment of chickens are unconstitutional. Newsom fires back with a joke.
