GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Zepbound are great at promoting weight loss, but they also cause folks to lose muscle along with fat, experts say.

A new study from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine suggests that GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy could lower your risk of developing dementia. That’s a potential game changer for the more than 6 million Americans diagnosed each year and the 100,000 who die from the memory-robbing disease annually.

Some new medications in development are also trying to solve for a persistent side effect of existing drugs: Patients who lose fat also tend to lose muscle. This can be particularly dangerous for older adults because it makes them more likely to fall and can worsen osteoporosis.
