General wildfire advice from the FCDO warns that wildfires happen often in Spain and Portugal during the summer months. It says, “wildfires are highly dangerous and unpredictable”, and advises travellers in high-risk areas to follow the advice of local authorities.

Firefighters in Spain and Portugal are battling wildfires ahead of an expected rise in temperatures that could worsen the situation on the Iberian Peninsula.

Nearly 1,000 soldiers have been deployed to battle wildfires. Spain’s meteorological agency has issued red-level “extreme risk” alerts for five regions amid rising temperatures.
