Las Vegas Aces center has won MVP, ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported on Sunday morning. Wilson averaged a league-most 23.4 points per game this season, alongside 10.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 1.6 steals. Her scoring has skyrocketed through three postseason games; she’s averaging 29.3 points on 55.4% shooting.
The closest WNBA MVP race between two candidates was in 2005, when the Houston Comets' Sheryl Swoopes defeated Seattle's Lauren Jackson by just two points (327-325) despite Jackson earning more first-place votes (20-16). Swoopes and Jackson finished their careers with three MVP awards, as did Los Angeles' Lisa Leslie.
WNBA media voters have deemed Kelsey Mitchell as one of the top five players in the WNBA this season. She's finalist for MVP, which will be announced Sunday.
Shortly after the news came out, the WNBA posted a video of the Aces star receiving her MVP trophy back on Friday. While WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert was at the Las Vegas facility to give Wilson her trophy and a congratulatory speech, another special guest actually handed Wilson the trophy: her boyfriend and Heat star Bam Adebayo.
