A stock symbol is a series of letters assigned to a security for trading purposes. Investors started using them to streamline hundreds of trades being made by the minute.

So, for example, if ABC company, whose stock symbol is ABC, issued Class A and B shares, the new ticker for these shares would be ABC.A. and ABC.B., respectively.
