Artificial intelligence (AI) giant Anthropic says it will commit 5% of its shares to a fund that will make donations for the "public good". The announcement comes as Anthropic lays the ground for a potential blockbuster stock market listing that could value the firm at more than $1tn (£750bn).

Anthropic said that the Public Benefit Fund, a wholly owned limited-liability company, would add to its work in fields such as AI safety and biomedical research. It would be able to pursue “bolder approaches” to problems such as job losses from AI and “might explore large donations to traditional non-profits or direct distributions to specific populations”,

The fund could send distributions directly to populations affected by AI labor disruption.

Anthropic said it wants to create a new charitable LLC with the company's stock as its sole asset.
