CHARLOTTE—The PGA of America made a bold statement Wednesday evening that will delight golf purists: despite days of drenching rain at Quail Hollow, Thursday's opening round of the 107th PGA Championship will proceed without preferred lies.

The PGA Championship has long been the major that has struggled to find an identity outside of getting the top 100 players in the world.

While Rory McIlroy is clearly the man to beat at the 2025 PGA Championship, he faces a solid group of contenders.

A total of 22 golfers have won multiple PGA Championships over its 109 history. Of those 22, seven have won titles in back-to-back years. A select group of six have won three or more total championship over their careers, with Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen tied for the most with five titles each.

The world’s best golfers put the finishing touches on their game on Wednesday at Quail Hollow Golf Club for the PGA Championship.

Don’t forget about the LIV players, too. While Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are the favorites to win the 107th PGA Championship, they have plenty of challengers. That includes defending champion Xander Schauffele, who is fifth among the early betting favorites, and the 2017 PGA winner at Quail Hollow, Justin Thomas.

Charlotte, N.C., has endured several inches of rain recently but PGA officials made a point of saying preferred lies would not be in effect at Quail Hollow.

The 2025 PGA Championship returns to Quail Hollow in Charlotte for the second major of the golf season. This North Carolina course last hosted in 2017 when Justin Thomas won by two strokes, and as luck would have it for J.T., he's playing some of his best golf of the last few years entering this edition of the tournament.
