The late release of casualty figures at the gathering of millions of people was seen as shielding the political fortunes of a local leader with national aspirations.

A day after the stampede at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, a prominent seer on Thursday accused Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath of lying and misleading the saints.

The Maha Kumbh area in Prayagraj has been declared a no-vehicle zone, with VVIP passes cancelled and roads leading to the fair have been converted into one-way routes to ensure an orderly flow of devotees, India Today reported.

The Maha Kumbh has witnessed over 11 crore devotees taking a holy dip in the sacred waters of Prayagraj during the first 14 days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath three times regarding the Maha Kumbh stampede and is closely monitoring the situation, officials said.

He, however, added that "to expect that those who have never respected the faith of India will respect the faith in Sanatan Dharma will be a mistake".
