The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has declared an insurance catastrophe for southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales following the impact of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Tropical Cyclone Alfred is expected to cross the southeast Queensland coast late this Thursday as a Category 2 storm. The last tropical cyclone to make landfall in the region was ex-Tropical Cyclone Zoe in 1974, half a century ago.

Dozens of flood rescues have been carried out and a record-breaking number of calls for help have been made after floods in Queensland.

Record rainfall is flooding homes, cutting off streets and forcing emergency rescue operations in south-east Queensland.
