United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said on Friday that the carrier will begin canceling 35 flights a day – or about 10% – at its Newark hub starting over the weekend due to government equipment failures and air traffic control staffing issues.

United Airlines, which has a hub at Newark, announced on May 2 that it would cancel 35 daily round-trip flights—representing about 10 percent of the flights operated by United out of EWR—due to the delays in order to protect their customers.

It was a bad weekend for Newark Liberty fliers as staffing shortages, equipment issues, a runway paving project and thunderstorms all contributed to nearly 1,000 delayed departures and arrivals.
