Several law firms have instituted programs that enable law students to work part of the summer with the firm, and part of the summer with a public interest organization, while the firm pays the students’ salaries for the entire summer.

SFS reports the average public interest salary based on 2023 graduates who participate in the Low Income Protection Plan (LIPP) to be $70,000. This does not include clerkships (although clerks are eligible for LIPP if they will pursue public interest work after completing their clerkship).
