Freezing drizzle is drizzle that freezes on contact with the ground or an object at or near the surface. Its METAR code is FZDZ. [1]

Freezing Drizzle (FZDZ, ZL): Freezing Drizzle is liquid precipitation that reaches the surface in the form of drops that are less than 0.5 millimeters in diameter. The drops then freeze on the earth's surface.

Liquid forms of precipitation include rain and drizzle and dew. Rain or drizzle which freezes on contact with a surface within a subfreezing air mass gains the preceding adjective "freezing", becoming the known freezing rain or freezing drizzle .

Freezing Drizzle: Most freezing drizzle soundings are similar to freezing rain soundings except that drizzle soundings usually are accompanied only by weak ascent and a dry layer near and above 700 mb on top of a low-level moist layer ( Figure 3 ).

Freezing rain is rain maintained at temperatures below freezing by the ambient air mass that causes freezing on contact with surfaces. Unlike a mixture of rain and snow or ice pellets, freezing rain is made entirely of liquid droplets.
