Look what’s brewing at the United States Botanic Garden! A corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) permanently planted in our Tropics house has a bloom growing. It measured 80 inches tall today, and we believe it is possible the bloom will open around August 4-6, 2025. This plant is over 8 years old and this is its third bloom. Previous blooms were in 2017 and 2021.The USBG has over 30 mature corpse flower plants, and we are part of a collaborative conservation project with other botanic gardens

A corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) bloom opened last night, surprising us by opening a bit earlier than we guessed it would. While the smell would have been strongest last night, a small amount of its stinky smell remains. The Garden is open regular hours today, and we suspect the bloom to continue standing tomorrow. We now have multiple mature corpse flowers in our collection as part of our conservation work, and we suspect others might bloom later this summer. Learn more about this fasci

Our corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) bloom is standing tall and beautiful today. It began opening around 3:45 pm yesterday, and came into full, stinky bloom in the evening. Our visitors last night enjoyed the smell, describing it as “the stink at the bottom of the diaper barrel” and “a big trashbin on a hot summer day.” It smells strongest during the first 12-15 hours after opening (last night), as that is when the female flowers are open and receptive to pollen. Now it’s beginning to head

It’s opening time! Our corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) bloom is opening! We’ll stay open until 9 pm tonight if you want to come see it opening. The famous stinky smell is just beginning and will grow into the evening, trying to attract those fly and beetle pollinators! 💚 The response to our precious corpse flower, Smellanie, was nothing short of incredible. We’re so thrilled to have shared this rare botanical marvel with you, and to shine a spotlight on the important conservation story behind her spectacular bloom. True to diva form, Smellanie made us wait… and wait… almost convincing us she might not bloom at all. But when she finally did…WOW, what a showstopper! We welcomed nearly 7000 visitors into the Conservatory! We thank you for your patience, good hum

So what does a corpse flower *actually* smell like? We thought we'd call in the experts. Bridget is completing a PhD in the odour of human remains: you might recognise her from the livestream. Go behind the scenes with the science as we prepare to say goodnight to Putricia at midnight tonight. | Botanic Gardens of Sydney

Sauromatum venosum, also known as voodoo lily. This is in the same family as the corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) and smells like it too! (Our gardener Emily compares it more to the smell of bad breath than rotting meat). Similar to the corpse flower. this plant is also known to emit heat to spread the smell far and wide to attract pollinators. It is native to Africa and Asia. | U.S. Botanic Garden
