The Curtius rearrangement enables the conversion of acyl azides into isocyanates via thermally induced rearrangement with loss of dinitrogen. Developed by Theodor Curtius in the late 19th century, the reaction proceeds through rearrangement of the acyl azide to the isocyanate, and the resulting isocyanate can be trapped by nucleophiles to afford amines, carbamates, or ureas.
